Location MacDonnell covers the rural and pastoral areas lying south-west of the MacDonnell Ranges near the South Australian border.
   
Origin This electorate derives its name from the Ranges which run east and west of Alice Springs. The Ranges were named by McDougall Stuart in 1860 after the Governor of South Australia, R G MacDonnell.
