Location Arafura encompasses the north-west section of Arnhem Land, in the Territory's north, and includes the towns of Cooinda, Jabiru, Maningrida and Warruwi, and Bathurst and Melville Islands in the Timor Sea.
   
Origin The electorate takes its name from the Arafura Sea which abuts the Division on the northern coast and islands. Arafura was a name given by the Dutch in 1827 to the sea to Australia's north, including the Spice Islands (Indonesia). It also refers to the mountain people of the Moluccan Islands.
