Description Rural and regional
   
Location A remote country district which extends from the Iron Triangle city of Whyalla, on the Spencer Gulf, and west and northwest to the borders with WA and the NT. It includes pastoral leases, Aboriginal and Crown lands.
   
Origin Named after William Giles (1835-1897), who led expeditions into Central Australia, discovering Lake Amadeus and Mount Olga, and into the Great Victoria Desert to Western Australia. He was the author of 'Australia Twice Traversed'.
   
Products/Industries Agriculture, rural industries, ports, heavy industry including iron and steel.
