| Origin
| Named after Robert Richard Torrens (1814-1884) who came to Adelaide from Ireland in 1839. He served as Collector of Customs, Legislative Councillor, Treasurer and Premier. He introduced the Real Property Act and resigned from Parliament to become Registrar-General. He pioneered the Torrens title system of land registration, since adopted by the rest of Australia and many other countries. |
