Browse Search

Here you have an overview of the four major sections in the Parliament@Work site.

Parties at a Glance: from the list select a political party. The information provides a link to the party's web site. For "Other Parties" you are directed to the National Library of Australia web site that has links to the web sites of most minor political parties.

Parliaments at a Glance: click the parliament of your choice for summary information, e.g. history, voting system, local government, official emblems.

Parliamentarians: two steps are required here. First, click the parliament of your choice - if appropriate, specify either Upper or Lower House. If you simply select the parliament, you will receive information on members of both Upper and Lower Houses. Next, click "GO" in the top right hand corner to receive a list based on your search criteria. From this list you can go to detailed information about particular members of parliament, including links to information on their electorates.

Electorates: two steps are required here. First, click the parliament of your choice - if appropriate, specify either Upper or Lower House. If you simply select the parliament, you will receive information on electorates in both Upper and Lower Houses. Next, click "GO" in the top right hand corner to receive a list based on your search criteria. From this list you can go to detailed information about particular electorates.

Parliamentarians Search

Here you have the opportunity to refine your search for parliamentarians. You can select one or more criteria. Options are provided in drop-down boxes for:

  • Gender
  • Position
  • Political Party
  • Parliament.

If you select "all positions" in the "position" field, the search extends across leaders of government or opposition. If you want to find ALL parliamentarians for a particular party, or ALL female members in the NSW Parliament, leave the "position" field blank.

The party list in the "Select a Party" drop down menu is not exhaustive. To find parties not on this list and their representatives, please use either the "Select a Parliament" option and scroll down the list, or select "Text" to perform a keyword search of the database.

You can also search by:

  • Surname
  • Electorate
  • Former Occupation.

For these three criteria you can enter the full word or the first few letters, e.g. "BA" in the surname field will bring up results on all surnames starting with the letters "BA".

The Search function does not search the "At a Glance" sections of the site, i.e. Parliaments at a Glance or Parties at a Glance.

Ministerial and Shadow Ministerial appointments

Within this field you will find listed Ministers of the Government and Members of the Opposition Ministry who are known as "Shadow Ministers". Also listed within this field are Parliamentary Secretaries who are junior Ministers.

Searching former occupations in Parliamentarians Search

To find the former occupations of Members of Parliament in a particular field of work you may need to search across a range of possible of occupations. For example, in the field of law, look for lawyer, barrister, solicitor; in the field of union work, look for union secretary, industrial officer, research officer, union official; in the field of tertiary education look for lecturer, tutor, professor; if searching for leadership positions search for president, director, head.

Electorates Search

Here you have the opportunity to refine your search for electorates. You can select one or more criteria. Options are provided in drop-down boxes for:

  • Political Party
  • Parliament
  • Description (e.g. outer metropolitan)

The party list in the "Select a Party" drop down menu is not exhaustive. To find parties not on this list and their representatives, please use either the "Select a Parliament" option and scroll down the list, or select "Text" to perform a keyword search of the database.

You can also search by:

  • Postcode
  • Electorate
  • Locality
  • Products/Industries.

For these four criteria you can enter the full postcode or word or the first few letters, e.g. "BA" in the electorates field will bring up results on all electorates starting with the letters "BA".

The Search function does not search the "At a Glance" sections of the site, i.e. Parliaments at a Glance or Parties at a Glance.

Text Search

Enter a word or part thereof to search through the database of parliamentarians and electorates. For example, "mining" will bring up a list of electorates where mining is a key industry.

Census Data

Census data is provided as a link from electorate pages except where electorate boundaries have changed since the last census. The last census was in 1996. The next census will be in 2001.
